Continuing Education
Classes for
Massage Therapists

THERA-SSAGE is an Approved Provider of Continuing Education under the
National Certification Board of Therapeutic Massage & Bodywork (# 328461).
These classes may also satisfy requirements for Continuing Education for nurses
and other health professionals.  Check with your individual board.

The National Board no longer uses the term "Category A Provider".  The correct
terminology is "Approved Provider of Continuing Education under the NCBTMB".
The Board no longer recognizes the term "CEU" but has replaced that with "Contact
Hour".

If you are maintaining your license for the state of North Carolina, you must
obtain 25 contact hours of continuing education for every two year period.  If your
initial license was issued for more than one year, but less than two, you are only
obligated to have 12 hours.  North Carolina requires that you have three hours of
professional ethics every renewal period.  Other rules include that you may not get
credit for more than three hours of business classes, and that you may have a
maximum of 12 hours obtained by distance learning.  For a complete explanation
of the regulations, visit the
North Carolina Board of Massage & Bodywork Therapy
website.  The National Certification Board requires 48 hours of continuing
education every four years in order for you to maintain that credential, including six
hours in professional ethics, at least two of which must be in Standard V of the
Standards of Practice.
AMTA also requires professional members to obtain
continuing education.  Other boards have different requirements.
 Check with the
board in your particular state or country to make sure you will get the credit you are
expecting.

Call 828-288-3727 for more information or to register for classes.  Our education
facility, The Education Station, located next door to our wellness center at 431 S.
Main St., Rutherfordton, NC.  Unless noted otherwise, all classes for 2008 will be
held there.  Please pay attention that classes that are sponsored by AMTA are
usually held elsewhere and we do not personally accept registration for AMTA
classes.  You must contact the Unit Coordinator mentioned in the class listing.

Here at our facility, table classes are limited to 14 students.  Lecture only and chair
massage classes are limited to 30 attendees.  We like to have a personal experience
and avoid overcrowding classes.

Deposit and Refund Policy:  Unless otherwise noted, a deposit
of 50.00 is required to hold your place in class.  Cancellations
made two weeks in advance will receive a full refund.
Cancellations of less than two weeks, but more than 48 hours in
advance of the class, will receive credit towards a future class.
Cancellations of less than 48 hours will not receive a refund or
any future credit.  It is suggested that you register as far in
advance as possible, as some classes sell out very early.  We
will be glad to put you on a notification list for a full class in the
event of a cancellation.

In our years of providing Continuing Education, we have tried our best to avoid
canceling any classes.  We will normally carry on with a class even if we only get a
very small group.  If we are hosting an instructor from out of state and the required
number of students fails to sign up, we will notify you at least one week ahead of
time that the class has been canceled and give you a refund.  In the event that we
are forced to cancel a class for any reason, we will refund your money in full.  In the
event that inclement weather forces the cancellation of any class during the winter
months, we will make every attempt to reschedule the class.  If you are unable to
attend the rescheduled class, your money will be refunded.  In the event inclement
weather forces
you to cancel your attendance at the last minute (less than 48 hours
notice), you will receive credit towards a future class.  We have classes in different
states and  people attending from several states and we just can't be responsible for
the weather everywhere.

OUR SCHEDULE OF CLASSES FOR 2008 IS ROCKING!

Schedule of Classes 2008

July 26 (Sat) Techniques for TMJ Dysfunction.  This is a powerful technique I call a
real money-maker.  We get a lot of dentist referrals here and this is the reason why.
Taught by Vicki Bates.  8 CE Contact Hours.  9am-6pm.  160.00.

August 1-2 (Fri & Sat)
THE DEEP TISSUE FOR PELVIS AND VISCERA CLASS HAS
BEEN CANCELLED DUE TO CIRCUMSTANCES BEYOND OUR CONTROL.

August 8-9 (Fri & Sat) Venus Rising Prenatal Massage with Sue Walker.  Venus
Rising is an awesome class that will give you new insight and techniques to use for
addressing the unique changes and discomforts of the childbearing year through
massage.  Sue is a certified Cranio Sacral therapist and was certified in Prenatal
Massage by Carole Osborne-Sheets.  This is a great class.  14 CE Contact Hours.
299.00.

August 15 (Fri)  How to Pass the NCE (no CE credit).  Taught by Laura Allen, author
of the Plain & Simple Guide to Therapeutic Bodywork & Massage Certification.
9am-5pm.  125.00 includes a copy of the book with practice exams on CD; 100.00 if
you already own the book.

August 23 (Sat)  Intro to Lymphatic Drainage.  Learn the basic techniques and you
can give a full session of LD or incorporate into any modality.  Taught by Vicki
Bates.  8 CE Contact Hours.  9am-6pm.  160.00.

August 29-30 (Fri & Sat) Siddha Massage with Bob Counts.  This ancient massage
from India actually predates Ayurveda.  It is one of the most profoundly relaxing
massages, utilizing a specially blended hot oil.  15 CE Contact Hours.  200.00.

September 13 (Sat) The Triangle Unit of AMTA is hosting Laura Allen's Double
Whammy Class at the Medical Arts Massage School in Raleigh, North Carolina.  The
morning class is 3 CE Contact Hours Ethics Review (Standard V) and the afternoon
class is 3 CE Contact Hours of Marketing.  You must register for this class through
AMTA.  Contact Triangle Unit Coordinator Bonnie Salu at 919-828-4328.  Cost is 30.00
for AMTA members and 60.00 for non-members.

September 26 (Fri) Another Double Whammy!  The morning class is 3 CE Contact
Hours of Ethics Review, including the required elements of Standard V that
everyone is obligated to have for renewal, from 9am-12 noon.  The afternoon class
is 3 Contact Hours of Insurance Billing for MTs from 1:30-4:30.  Each class is 50.00 or
attend both for 95.00.  Taught by Laura Allen.  Insurance billing now accounts for
between 40-50% of my business, and you can learn to do the same.  Insurance is a
buffer against inflation when the economy is down.  People who can't afford to pay
full price will still come when they can get out for the price of a copay.  It's time for
you to add this to your business, if you're ready, willing and able to deal with the
paperwork--and that's what you'll learn in this class.

September 27 (Sat) Techniques for Low Back Pain.  Taught by Vicki Bates.  Learn
invaluable NMT and medical massage techniques for getting people out of pain.  8
CE Contact Hours.  9am-6pm.  160.00.

September 28 (Sat)  The Piedmont Unit of AMTA is hosting two classes by Laura
Allen.  These classes will be held in the Charlotte area.  Intake Protocols and SOAP
Charting for Medical Massage (3 CE Contact Hours) will take your interviewing and
charting skills to the next level, professionally appropriate for physician referrals
and insurance reimbursement.  There will also be a 3 CE Contact Hour Ethics
Review.  You must register for this class through AMTA.  Contact Piedmont Unit
Coordinator Lisa Castellano at 704-843-2338.  Cost is 30.00 for AMTA members and
60.00 for non-members.

October 3-5 (Fri, Sat & Sun)  Indian Head Massage.  This was our most popular class
in 2007!  Taught by Christine Courtney, owner of the Obus School of Healing
Therapies in Dublin, Ireland.  This class is the deal of the century and one of the
most awesome classes you'll ever attend.  22 hours of Indian Head and 3 hours of
Standard V Ethics Review for a total of 25 CE Contact Hours, 375.00.  Indian Head
Massage is a chair massage that is directed at the chakra system, and it is
performed in any chair--not a massage chair.  This routine lasts for an hour, and it
puts you into a coma!  Then you feel wonderfully energized when you get up.
Please visit our Student Testimonials page and see what people had to say about
this class.  Christine is one of the most fun and knowledgeable teachers you will
ever meet.
THIS CLASS IS NOW SOLD OUT.

October 11-12(Sat & Sun) Working With Fibromyalgia.  This class incorporates
techniques from myofascial release, Active Isolated Stretching, and Russian
massage into protocols that will ease the pain of your fibro clients.  Taught by Sheila
Berger, this is one of our most popular classes.  Sheila is a former instructor at the
Atlanta School of Massage and is a very knowledgeable and engaging teacher.  How
many of your clients have fibro?  Take this class and learn some new techniques for
helping them.  16 CE Contact Hours, 275.00.

Hours, 300.00.

of the Plain & Simple Guide to Therapeutic Bodywork & Massage Certification.

you already own the book.

November 14-15 (Fri & Sat) Lomi-Lomi Sacred Bodywork, Level 2 with Gloria
Coppola-Gaber.  Expand and refine your knowledge of the philosophy and

is awe-inspiring and it's worth it to come to the class just to get the bodywork.  14
CE Contact Hours.  225.00 plus 25.00 for supplies.  Class meets from 9am-5:30 pm
both days.

April 24 (Fri) Carpal Tunnel Syndrome with Gloria Coppola-Gaber.  Learn valuable

April 25 (Sat) Insurance Billing (3 CE Contact Hours) and Marketing (3 CE Contact
Hours) with Laura Allen.  Laura successfully bills more than $50,000 worth of
insurance claims yearly without accepting Worker's Comp or personal injury cases
(although these will be discussed in the class), and she is a master of marketing
your business at little or no cost.  Laura is the author of
One Year to a Successful
Massage Therapy Practice
(LWW, 2008).  100.00 for both classes or 50.00 to attend

taking one of the NCB exams or the MBLEx, this prep class will get you ready.
Laura Allen is the author of the Plain & Simple Guide to Therapeutic Massage &
Bodywork Certification and has helped many students pass their exams, including
those who have failed multiple times before attending this class.  125.00 includes
the latest edition of the book.  If you already own Laura's book, bring it to class and
you can attend for 100.00.  Class meets from 9am-5pm.  There is no credit offered
for this class.  And I'll bet it's the only class you've ever attended that comes with a
guarantee:  if you follow my instructions for how to study and how to take the exam,
and you don't pass, you can attend this class for free as many times as it takes you
to pass.

May 23 (Sat) Thai on the Table.  Gloria Coppola-Gaber teachers traditional Thai
massage modified so you can do the work on the table, so that neither client nor
practitioner has to be down on the floor.  Thai massage is a great modality that we
sometimes can't offer to elderly or disabled clients because of the traditional
practice of being on the floor.  Done on the table, it can be used on anyone to help
restore mobility, flexibility and elasticity to the muscles.  This class is 9 CE Contact
Hours, meeting from 8am-6pm.  Cost is 125.00.

May 29-30 (Fri & Sat).  Spa Techniques Without a Wetroom.  We hate to call this a
class.  It's more like spending a weekend at the spa.  Learn to use hot stones,
paraffin, mud, salt glow scrubs, and essential oils to give the client a spa experience
even if you don't have the fancy trappings normally associated with a spa.  If you
have access to running water and a kitchen crockpot, you can rock and roll with
these great techniques.  16 CE Contact Hours.  275.00.  You couldn't get half of these
treatments at a spa for that price so the bodywork alone is worth the price of tuition.
Class meets from 9am-6pm.  Taught by Laura Allen.

June 5-6 (Fri & Sat).  Lomi Lomi Level II with Gloria Coppola-Gaber.  Take your
Sacred Dance around the table to the next level.  You cannot attend this class
unless you have attended Gloria's Level I class.  14 CE Contact Hours.  This is such
a wonderful experience it's indescribable.  You'll feel very blessed for receiving and
giving this bodywork.  14 CE Contact Hours.  225.00 plus 25.00 for supplies you get
to take home.  9am-5:30 pm.

June 13 (Sat).  Techniques for TMJ and Ear Coning with Vicki Bates.  8 CE Contact
Hours, 160.00.  TMJ work is a money-maker.  It's also very gratifying to see
someone who suffers with this dysfunction get immediate results--it's that quick.
Even after one session your clients will notice a big difference.  Ear coning is a great
add-on therapy that can put more income in  your pocket and save your hands at the
same time.  9am-6pm.

June 20 (Sat).  Laura Allen's Double Whammy--Ethics Review (Standard V as
required by both the North Carolina Board and the National Certification Board is
included) and Marketing.  Each class is 3 CE Contact Hours.  50.00 each, 100 for both
classes.  Ethics meets from 9am-12 pm and Marketing meets from 1:30-4:30 pm.
These are two of Laura Allen's most popular classes.  Ethics can be fun!  It doesn't
have to be boring.  Our class is very interactive.  Laura is a master of marketing
massage in no-cost and low-cost ways and is the author of
One Year to a Successful
Massage Therapy Practice
(LWW, 2008).

June 26-28  (Fri-Sun).  LYPOSSAGE Zones 1,2, and 3
Linda Steele is a certified LYPOSSAGE instructor and will be teaching this modality
that is gaining popularity all over the world as a treatment for cellulite.  Get your
money back out of this class from just ONE client!  In fact, Linda has suggested that
if you have a client who would really like to get rid of cellulite, you could ask them to
pay for your class in exchange for doing the treatments for half price.  LYPOSSAGE
is normally performed in a series of 18 treatments, and the average cost of it in the
US is 1895.00 for the series.  Proprietary products will also be available for purchase
at the class.  This class is good for 24 CE Contact Hours.  Cost is 995.00.

July 11 (Sat).  Techniques for Low Back Pain with Vicki Bates.  Vicki is a whiz at
getting people out of pain.  Come and learn her best tricks for releasing stubborn
muscles and restoring mobility.  8 CE Contact Hours.  160.00.

July 24-25 (Fri & Sat) Healing Touch Level 1 with Judy Ray.  Healing Touch was the
first class I ever attended, back in 1993.  This wonderful energetic modality can be
used alone or incorporated into any session.  You do not have to be a massage
therapist in order to attend.  More details to follow.

August 8 (Sat).  Techniques for Shoulder Pain w/Vicki Bates.  Great NMT techniques
for helping people with rotator cuff injuries and any other shoulder dysfunction.
Restore mobility and get people out of pain!  8 CE Contact Hours, 160.00.

guarantee:  if you follow my instructions for how to study and how to take the exam,
and you don't pass, you can attend this class for free as many times as it takes you

August 29-30 (Sat & Sun) Working With Fibromyalgia with Sheila Berger.  Learn
Active Isolated Stretching, Russian Massage, and Myofascial Release techniques
that will help your clients that are suffering from fibromyalgia.  This is a great class
and you'll come away with a lot of new tricks to enhance your bodywork routines.
16 CE Contact Hours.  275.00.  Class meets from 9am-6pm.

September 12 (Sat) Intro to Lymphatic Drainage.  Taught by Vicki Bates.  Learn the

CALL FOR INSTRUCTORS:

If you have a class that you think will be of interest to students, whether or not you
are already an approved provider, contact Laura Allen at 828-288-3727.   We are
currently working on our schedule for 2009 and 2010 and would be glad to have
some new and interesting offerings for our students.  Some of the classes we have
in the works for 2009 include Massage for the Cancer Patient; Thai on the Table;
Posture, Pain and Prevention; Techniques for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, and Healing
Touch.  Our schedule for the following year has to be completed by October 1 so
don't wait until all our dates are gone to get in touch.
We're looking for classes
that are on the cutting edge, so to speak, and new and interesting offerings.

Please read our entire roster of classes before contacting us.  We are not
interested in more of what we already have.

We also offer community education.  If you are local and have a class you think
people would enjoy attending---whether that's a personal growth class, foreign
language, knitting, basketweaving, or anything of interest to the public, give us a
call.  We enjoy offering great learning opportunities to our clients.
