Welcome to the First Edition of our newsletter! We want to keep you up to date with the latest
developments at THERA-SSAGE. To begin with, thanks to all our customers who have made our first few
months a success. You are the reason we are in business.
THERA-SSAGE will soon be partnering with Rutherford Hospital to become a screening facility for health
assessments. The hospital hopes to complete overall health assessments on approximately 6000
people bi-annually. Please watch the newspaper for the exact date that this will start. We’ve been told
it will be sometime around April.
On Saturday, February 7,
Champ Allen, a partner here, performed three hours of chair massage at the Health Fair at Spencer
Baptist Church. This is a totally free service that we provide to community service events. If your
church or organization is conducting something along those lines, please give us a call. Have chair will
travel!
If you listened to WCAB during the week of Feb. 7-13, you had a chance to win two free one-hour
massages. The Grand Prize winner (not yet announced) will be receiving a spa treatment package worth
over 250.00. Someone is going to have a Happy Valentine’s Day. Speaking of that, it’s THIS SATURDAY!
If you don’t have a gift for your sweetie yet, consider getting them a gift certificate from
THERA-SSAGE. They’ll love you for it!

THERA-SSAGE is currently in negotiations with a Doctor of Naturopathy from a well-established clinic of
alternative and complimentary medicine in Asheville to provide services here at our office. The Doctor
will agree to see patients here two days per month if we have enough interest to support that. She will
provide a full range of natural, non-invasive medical services. If you would be interested in supporting
this service by making an appointment for a consultation, please let me know. We are very anxious to
have her come here, but we need to be certain we could make it worth her while, so please give us a
call if you have any interest in this.
THERA-SSAGE is also offering other services:
Tuesday, March 2, we will be hosting Tom Hartman, the owner of The Hypnosis Center in Salisbury. Tom
practiced forensic hypnotherapy with the police department for many years before retiring and now
focuses on the use of hypnosis to aid people in weight loss, quitting smoking, getting rid of phobias,
ridding yourself of negatives you may be harboring. Please call our office to schedule with Tom.
THERA-SSAGE is also making arrangements to host Jack Boyd, a Certified Rolfer, a couple of days a
month. Rolfing is a very specialized bodywork system of structural integration that is aimed at
loosening and opening up myofascial tissue that has tightened incorrectly, pulling bones and
musculature out of alignment. Rolfing is normally performed in a series of 10 sessions, although
shorter protocols are available. If you have an interest in this, please give us a call. You can find out
more about Jack’s work by visiting his website at www.bodycentering.com
THERA-SSAGE is also on the lookout for another bodyworker to join our office. We would also consider
an Aesthetician and a nail artist to come on board with us. If you know of someone who is looking for a
nice space to work out of, please have them give us a call.
We are pleased to announce that Champ Allen has recently completed Master training in Gendai Reiki.
He is now a “Gokui Kaiden”, the highest level of mastership in Gendai Reiki Ho, which is an Oriental
healing modality. Champ’s new title is “Shihan”, meaning “teacher” of this powerful form of hands-on
healing. Reiki is not a massage; it is a powerful form of energy work that restores balance to the body
on a physical, mental and spiritual level. If you suffer from any chronic condition, this treatment will help
you enormously. Sometimes clients with Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome can barely stand
to be touched. Reiki is so gentle you will feel no pain at all, just a deep sense of relaxation and well-
being.
Champ is available for evening and Saturday appointments. Give yourself a gift today and schedule a
session.
We are also pleased to offer Resonant Field Imaging, a new service provided by Patti Wagner. RFI is an
actual external MRI measurement of your body’s energy in a print-out format. Having a measurement
BEFORE and AFTER a bodywork session will make a believer out of you! Call for more information.

Thank you so much to all of our clients who called when the first newsletter came out! We were in
danger of getting a swelled head from all the nice comments! Of course our clients are just the nicest
people…
Update from last newsletter: Jack Boyd, who is certified in the Rolf Method of Structural Integration, will
be joining our staff later this year. Jack practices in Asheville and Hendersonville, and now at THERA-
SSAGE. He will be available every other Thursday beginning September 1. SI is a form of massage
therapy that seeks to loosen and open up connective tissue, which envelops our muscles and binds
them to our bones. Sometimes this tissue tightens incorrectly, pulling our musculature and skeleton
our of optimal alignment and balance with gravity. SI is normally performed in a series of 10 sessions.
The cost of SI is 100.00 per session. Several folks who are traveling too much to start this summer have
signed up for the fall. Jack is willing to start earlier in the event that there is enough interest, so give
us a call. Find our more about Jack’s work by visiting his website at www.bodycentering.com
or just give us a call. If you are suffering from chronic pain, this could be just what you need.
Unfortunately, we did not receive enough calls to warrant the ND joining us here. That is still something
we would like to manifest, so if you are interested in natural health and would like to see a Naturopath in
Rutherfordton, give us a call. We are still working on it!
Are you aware that we have a different spa service specially priced every month? During the month of
April, Hot Stone Massage is only 60.00. It’s usually 80.00 and worth every penny, so take this chance to
get it on the cheap!
We will be doing free chair massage at Earth Fare on Friday, June 4 from 11am until 5 pm.
Shop til you drop and get a massage at the same time!
Did you know that Carla Trainum, one of our therapists here has a degree in Agriculture? Yep, and she’
s a big gardener, too. You might just want to pick her brain a little bit while you’re getting a massage.
She might tell you how to get rid o’them pesky varmints in your garden.
Laura Allen has just returned from learning the ancient Chinese art of cupping. Cupping involves
placing cups on the body and creating a vacuum to draw out toxins, increase circulation, release trigger
points, and so much more. The effect of cupping is cumulative, so you get improvement with each
session. This technique is at least 5000 years old. In order to gain valuable practice with the technique,
Laura will add cupping to your massage session at no charge for the first 50 clients that request it.
See what cupping will do for you!
Our friend Linda Carpenter has been following a diet of 85-95% raw food for over 12 years ago. To quote
her own words, her achy joints, chronic sinus and yeast infections, chronic fatigue, headaches,
hypoglycemia, female problems, indigestion, liver spots, and even the need to wear glasses has
disappeared. Think raw food has to be boring? Not at all. Linda has offered to teach a class here in raw
foods, including serving us all a gourmet meal that we would be glad to serve to company. The cost is
20.00 per person for the class and the meal. As soon as we get 10 interested folks---well, nine actually,
because I will certainly be there, we’ll schedule the class. Please call to let us know if you are
interested in this. Linda has presented this program at Gardner-Webb, private corporations, many
church groups, nurses and more. Everyone raves about it!
Laura and Champ Allen will be teaching Level 1 Reiki at the Southeastern School of Massage in
Greenville on June 19. You do not have to be a massage therapist in order to use this simple and
beautiful modality of healing from Japan. The price of the class is 150.00. If you are interested in
signing up, please give us a call. The class will meet from 9am-6pm. If you are a massage therapist, the
class is worth 8 CEU Contact Hours. This will also satisfy CEU requirements for nursing in most cases.

We tried to keep her here, but Ramona Blanton has taken off for the summer to work in a spa on Cape
Cod. Who would want to be in a place like that when they could be here on Main Street in
Rutherfordton??? At any rate, Ramona will be back with THERA-SSAGE in late August. In the meantime,
Heather Wiltse and Natalie Veres of Body in Balance will be handling our requests for Kaya
Regeneration Therapy here at our office.
Do you know that essential oils are mentioned in the Bible more than 140 times as a source of healing?
Raindrop Therapy is a procedure we offer here in which ten oils are layered onto your spine and feet. It
causes a gentle detox, something we all need. Laura will be teaching a class in Aromatherapy in
Rutherfordton on May 30. If you are a THERA-SSAGE client who does not need CEU credit, the class is
half-price to you----75.00----and includes a Raindrop, which is normally 70.00 by itself! What a bargain!
Call us to sign up.

Calendar of Events:
May is Fibromyalgia Education and Awareness Month. A good percentage of our clients are those who
suffer from FMS. Massage is one of the few things that help those folks feel better. Cardiovascular
exercise and detoxification are also keys to living well with Fibromyalgia. We can tell you all about it.
Please give us a call. Have you ever noticed how many silly holidays there are? National Muffin Week,
for instance, is May 3-7. I guess it’s not silly to people who make muffins for a living. May 16-22 is
National Dog Bite Prevention Week so be sure to tell your dog not to bite anyone during that week.
National Sea Monkey Day is May 16. If you bring me a sea monkey on May 16, I will give it a free
massage. (Not you, the sea monkey.)
May 1: MayFest: We will be on the lawn in front of the Norris Library doing free massage.
THERA-SSAGE is being joined for this event by Natalie and Heather from Body in Balance. It ain’t about
us, it’s about massage! Come by and get your freebie! We will also be giving out coupons for discounts
on office visits.
May 4-10: Teacher Appreciation Week
In honor of the selfless souls who teach, we are offering a 5.00 discount on massage or a 10.00 discount
on any spa service to teachers who call for an appointment during this week. You do not have to
actually have your appointment during this week, as long as it is booked during this week.
May 30: Laura Allen is teaching an 8 hour class in Aromatherapy at The Expansion Factor in the Gilkey
community. MTs who need CEU credit may attend for 150.00. If you are not a massage therapist, just a
person who is interested in this most ancient of healing arts, you may attend for 75.00. Did you know
that essential oils are mentioned in the Bible more than 140 times as a source of healing? This is a
great class. You will learn a lot about replacing toxic chemicals in your household with pure organic
essential oils, using them with your pets, and give and receive a Raindrop Therapy, a gentle
detoxification technique that will help your body flush out unwanted toxins.
June 2: THIS IS THE BIGGIE! We have never officially celebrated our Grand Opening. On this day,
Rutherford Hospital personnel will be at THERA-SSAGE to conduct free health screenings from 8-2 pm,
so we have decided to combine that and have our Open House that day as well. The hospital hopes to
get 6000 people (no, they won’t all be here!) to participate in this screening project over the next three
years. Participants will be checked every six months. So come by and do something for your health.
While you’re here, you can have a free snack and register for a free spa treatment that will be given
away.
June 4: We will be at Earth Fare doing free massage from 11am-5pm. Drop in and see all the healthy
things they have and get a free massage!
June 10: Living Healthy with Raw Foods, a class that we are sponsoring, will be taught by Linda
Carpenter at The Expansion Factor in Gilkey. The class starts at 6 pm and lasts about 2 and ½ hours.
For 20.00, you are going to be served a gourmet meal prepared from all raw food that you would be
happy to serve guests, a bunch of recipes, and hear how following this diet has totally changed Linda’s
life and cleared up many health problems she was suffering from. Please send a check for 20.00 to hold
your place in the class to our address above. It is limited to 20 people and we already have half of that
so act fast!
June 19: Laura and Champ will be teaching Reiki Level 1 at Southeastern School of Massage in
Greenville. 8 Contact Hours for MTs, but this is also open to the public. 150.00. Call us to register.
God has smiled on me in the form of a young man named Michael Green. Michael is a Certified Personal
Trainer who owns a business called “Changing Lives Fitness”, located at 137 S. Church St., Forest City.
For those of you that live around here, that is the old Mac & Co. Printing office that is across from the
big Baptist church on the corner of Main St. and Church St. Michael offers personal training in the form
of exercise combined with nutrition and counseling, at the ridiculously cheap rate of 5.00 for a 30-
minute session. No, this is not a misprint. Yes, I did say 5.00. Please call him today if you are ready (I
was way past ready) to make some changes in your life. You will get personalized workouts and all the
coaching you need and one-on-one attention from this excellent young man. His number is 828-248-
2103. He is available for personal sessions Monday through Thursday from 2-9 pm. Don’t waste another
day.
It is not too early to start calling and booking with Jack Boyd, who will be joining us in September. Jack
practices the Rolf Method of Structural Integration. If you want to know more about this, give us a call.
Jack will be starting here September 2 and will be here every other Thursday to practice this powerful
modality. If you have long-standing, chronic pain, this could be the thing that gets you out of it.
What do you know about the staff at THERA-SSAGE? Well, for starters, THERA-SSAGE is owned by Champ
and Laura Earwood Allen. Champ graduated from The Whole You School of Massage. He is a Gendai
Reiki Master and practices Reiki here; usually available for evening and Saturday appointments. Champ
also happens to be a Carpenter Extraordinaire (I’m his wife, I can say that) with 35 years experience. If
you need a good one, he can be reached at 828-287-7364 or 828-289-5049. Laura Allen, your author, is
also a graduate and the former administrator and instructor at The Whole You. I also have completed
graduate studies in psychology and after going 50,000.00 in debt on student loans, realized I am not
tactful enough to counsel people in need. My usual inclination is to say take responsibility and get a
life. For some reason, people don’t want to pay to hear that! So I do massage and if you ask, you can
get free counseling while you’re on the table, if you want me to tell you to get a life. I am proud that
Lippincott, Williams & Wilkins, the major textbook publisher, has bought a massage therapy textbook
that I wrote and it will be published later this year. Carla Trainum is also a graduate of TWY and also has
a B.S. in Agriculture. She is married to Rick Mullins and they live in Greenhill, where they board horses.
Rick is in the tile business. Ramona Blanton has gone to Cape Cod for the summer but will return in
August. Ramona is also a grad of TWY and is also a graduate of Gardner-Webb. We are just a bunch of
smart cookies. What can I say??? We’re humble, too.
SPA SPECIAL FOR MAY: Paraffin Hand Treatment added to any massage for only 5.00
SPA SPECIAL FOR JUNE: Raindrop Therapy, usually 70.00, special price 60.00

HEADLINE NEWS: THERASSAGE NOW ACCEPTS INSURANCE!
We are pleased to announce that we are now set up to accept insurance, for those whose policy will
cover massage therapy. Unfortunately, that does not mean every insurance company. Even if you are
sure that your particular company does cover massage, we will have to personally call them and get
their approval BEFORE performing any bodywork on you. Due to the overwhelming amount of
paperwork that goes along with filing, we must charge a 5.00 filing fee that is payable at the time of
service. You will also be asked to sign a practitioner’s lien, which means in the event your company
does not pay us for any reason, you will still be liable for the charges yourself. If you have a co-
payment, it will also be due at the time of service. Neither Medicare nor Medicaid will pay for massage
therapy, unfortunately. We do hope this move will assist some folks who need massage therapy and can’
t afford it on a regular basis. We will also accept Workman’s Comp for those who have been injured on
the job, providing you have a doctor referral. Sorry, but we are not able to take personal injury cases
for people who are waiting on a lawsuit or cash settlement. I currently have two cases like that on my
books that I have been waiting for over four years to collect money for and the cases are still not
settled, so we have had to make the decision not to participate in those.
Just a word to the wise, your insurance company is much more likely to pay if you have been referred
for massage therapy by your doctor. There are several doctors in the county who believe in the value
of massage therapy. We will be glad to refer you to one.
We also recommend several chiropractors (we want you to visit the one most conveniently located for
you). Many people don’t realize that SHORTENED MUSCLES pull bones out of alignment. An adjustment
is a wonderful thing, but you need your supporting muscles lengthened back out in order for maximum
healing to take place and for your alignment to last much longer. Dr. Scott Rash is located at
Breakthrough Chiropractic in Spindale. Dr. Chris Burley is on Allendale Drive behind the Tri-City Mall
and also has a practice in Boiling Springs. If you live in Polk County, give Dr. Ezra Edgerton in Columbus
a call. In our position of standing over your spine, we can often see obvious misalignments. While we
do NOT diagnose, we may refer you to a chiropractor when we see that it would benefit you.
Do you stretch every day? Why not? Simple stretching exercises will help keep the body limber, assist
in joint mobility, increase circulation, relieve tension and stress….if you work at a desk, make it a point
to stand and stretch every 30 minutes, starting today. You’ll be amazed at how different and less tired
you feel at the end of the day just be doing stretches throughout the day.
Lymphatic Drainage Therapy
is now available at THERA-SSAGE. Marilyn Mathews is a licensed massage therapist
(NCLMBT# 3330) and is certified in Lymphatic Drainage by the Upledger Institute. If you suffer from
edema, allergies, stress, fatigue, migraines, snoring, PMS, painful menstruation, fibrocystic myopathy,
acid reflux, incontinence…..the list of ailments that benefit from LDT is a loooonnngggg one. A session
of LDT takes approximately an hour and 15-30 mins and is 75.00. Marilyn is traveling from Weaverville to
be here and is available on selected dates only. Call 828-288-3727 for an appointment. LDT is a very
gentle modality and anyone can experience it pain-free, regardless of the condition they are in. I have
personally experienced Marilyn’s work and can tell you that it was very beneficial in clearing some long-
term ear and sinus drainage problems I was suffering from.
Guess What Else We Have………
Deany Martin, RN, is joining our staff the first of July for the purpose of doing MICRODERMABRASION!
You know we have to be unique! Most microdermabrasion is performed using aluminum oxide, which is
a toxic substance. We don’t even want it in our building, much less on our face! At THERA-SSAGE,
microdermabrasion is performed with BAKING SODA! Yes, that’s right, and it is totally non-toxic and the
results are simply amazing. If you’ve been considering a face-lift, try this first. Sessions are 100.00 and
worth every penny. Depending on the condition of your skin, Deany will discuss with you on your first
visit all the details such as how often you may want to have it, how many treatments you may need, how
long the results last, etc. We guarantee you that people will notice you beginning to look younger!
Microdermabrasion is also effective in lessening acne scars, sun damage, uneven skin tone and more.
You will not look like you’ve suffered a third-degree burn like you do with some procedures. You will
be able to walk right out of the office looking fine. You’ll be able to see the results before you have it
because yours truly plans to be first in line to have it. Deany is also a Certified Natural Health
Professional and knows a lot about natural healing through the use of herbs and nutrition. Please call
288-3727 to set up an appointment.
Thanks to everyone who came to our Grand Opening and participated in the Health Assessments
offered by Rutherford Hospital. The event was a resounding success. The hospital got more than the
usual number of participants. At the end of the day, Charlene Proctor, who was in charge of conducting
the assessments produced a print-out of the day’s activities and stated that our group had the lowest
blood pressure of any other group they have ever tested. Of course they did, because they GET
MASSAGE!
The North Carolina Chapter of the American Massage Therapy Association has just named Laura Allen
(yours truly), owner of THERA-SSAGE, the Education Coordinator for the entire state. I am excited about
it this opportunity to serve the AMTA because they do a lot for our profession.
Silly Holidays for July: National Doghouse Repair Month. For crying out loud, fix up that dilapidated
house your pooch is living in before the doghouse decorating police come after you. This is also
National Blueberry Month. Feel free to bring me a pie! Here’s a good one: July 7 is Father-Daughter
Take a Walk Together Day. July 17 is Cow Appreciation Day. Have you told your cow you love her
lately? July 17 is also Toss Away the Could-Haves and Should-Haves Day. Do you think you could go
one whole day without thinking or saying “could have” or “should have”? Make a bet with yourself. If
you go all day without the tyranny of the shoulds and coulds, treat yourself to a nice massage. Here, of
course.

It’s Our Birthday!
In just a couple of weeks we will be celebrating our First Anniversary! We want to say “Thank You So
Much” to all our clients. You have made our first year a grand success. We appreciate all the referrals
we have had from you, all the repeat business and gift certificate sales, and all the gratitude we are
shown on a daily basis. Our clients are the best!
Business After Hours
We hosted Business After Hours during July, and the turnout exceeded our wildest expectations. Over
50 people attended—most of whom had never been here before—to eat, drink and be merry, and do a
little business networking. It was a great event and we really enjoyed meeting so many people from the
Chamber of Commerce. If your business is not a Chamber member, get on the ball and join today. It is a
huge value for your money.
Manual Lymphatic Drainage Beneficial
Every client who has experienced MLD with Marilyn Mathews has been so impressed with the results. I
have personally had two of these sessions in the past month and it is an amazing modality. Edema,
allergies, migraine headaches and many other problems can be alleviated with this very gentle massage
technique. Your lymph is a toxic dump. Clean it out!
Microdermabrasion FAQ
Why is Microdermabrasion called “The Lunch-Hour Peel”?
Because the procedure takes less than an hour and there is NO recuperation time.
What problems can be addressed with Microdermabrasion?
Dry, patchy skin
Oily skin
Fine lines and wrinkles
Hyper-pigmentation
Superficial age spots
Acne-prone skin and acne scars
Blackheads and whiteheads
What happens during a Microdermabrasion?
Fully clothed, you lie back and relax on a vibrating pad while the therapist goes to work. The procedure
is non-invasive, painless, works on all skin types, and requires no recovery time. A high velocity stream
of extremely fine sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) is directed at the skin, while a high velocity vacuum
simultaneously sucks away the dead skin and crystals.
Why is the procedure at THERA-SSAGE superior?
Most places use aluminum oxide to perform this procedure. That is a toxic substance that can cause
eye damage, skin damage, and damage to the respiratory system if breathed in. We are very proud of
our biologically safe procedure.
Free Demonstration
Thurs., Sept 2 at 7 pm
Deany Martin, RN, CNHP will be performing a demonstration of Microdermabrasion. Please give us a call
at 288-3727 if you would like to attend as space is limited.
What a Deal! The Rolf Method of Structural Integration will be available here beginning Sept. 2. This
protocol of ten sessions will change your body and your life. Get rid of chronic pain and feel better than
you have in years. Normally the cost of SI is 100.00 per session. For each person who refers someone
else, BOTH will receive the sessions for only 66.00 each. SI makes so much difference in your mobility
and gets rid of long-held tension patterns. Golfers—lower your score! Athletes—increase your ability!
When your body is moving correctly, performance is optimized. These sessions last around an hour and
a half and loose clothing or bathing suits can be worn during the session.
Jack Boyd is a graduate of the Rolf Institute of Structural Integration in Colorado. Appointments with
Jack are available only on Thursdays at this time, as he is traveling here from out of town to work with
us. His first day is already filled so give us a call if you are interested in this extremely powerful form of
bodywork.
I’m first in line!
The Jade Turtle
I don’t usually advertise other businesses here, but I am making an exception for Autumn Zamzow,
Master of Chinese Medicine at The Jade Turtle in Lake Lure. Autumn is a Licensed Acupuncturist and
Master Herbalist.
My first acupuncture treatment with her took place last week and I was so impressed at the pain relief it
brought me. I am now lining up my third treatment and can’t wait to get it. It was a life-changing
experience for me. I experienced relief of pain that has been nagging me for more than a month—after
10 visits to the chiropractor and numerous massages—I was still in pain—and the acupuncture was very
helpful. The pain in my back, while still not totally gone, has been reduced so much that I feel compelled
to give Autumn and acupuncture credit. Her office number is 625-2727, and be sure to tell her I sent you!
HELP for TMJ Dysfunction
TMJ Dysfunction is Temperomandibular Joint Dysfunction. “Clicking” jaws, oral pain, teeth grinding, etc.
are often treated by dentists in the form of wearing an uncomfortable dental appliance, or heaven
forbid, even surgery. Stop the insanity! TMJ Dysfunction is so easy to treat with massage, we almost
hate to charge you for it (but we will!). Many times even one session will get rid of it for months on end.
Severe cases may require more than one visit. We put on a sterile glove and massage the inside of
your mouth, along with the surface muscles of mastication, neck and shoulder muscles, and banish that
nasty pain! TMJ, while sometimes caused by dental misalignments, is most frequently caused by stress.
So the massage works on two levels, decreasing stress, and getting rid of the dysfunction by loosening
the taut bands of muscles in your mouth. Don’t keep living in misery. We recently treated a client who
said she hadn’t been able to eat a hot dog in more than ten years because she couldn’t get her mouth
to open that wide. She left here headed for the nearest fast-food joint after only one t

WELCOME RAMONA
Ramona Blanton has spent the summer working in a fancy-schmancy spa in Cape Cod, MA, and has a few
new tricks up her sleeve! We have revamped our menu of spa services—even came down on the price
of several items, and added on some new and exciting treatments. Our specials for the Fall months are:
October: Herbal Body Wrap, usually 60.00, 50.00 during the month of October.
November: Peppermint Reflexology, usually 40.00, 30.00 during November.
December: Hot Stone Massage, usually 80.00, only 60.00 during December.
TIS THE SEASON FOR GIFT CERTIFICATES
Speaking of December, do you realize how quickly this year has gone by? It is just amazing. The Holiday
Season will soon be upon us. Remember your loved ones with the gift of touch. Most people don’t
need another thing to catch the dust in their house. It’s hard to buy clothes that fit for other people,
and many times, their taste is not the same as yours and they’re just too dang polite to say so. Stop the
shopping insanity and buy everyone on your list a Gift Certificate from THERA-SSAGE. We’ll make it
worth your while. If you buy 5, we’ll throw in another one for free. You can of course keep them all to
yourself if you prefer.
CAROLINA EMERGENCY RESPONSE MASSAGE TEAM IN ACTION
Laura Allen, your author, is a member of the CERMT. A few weeks ago during the bad weather, myself
and another therapist from Winston-Salem went to the worst-hit part of the mountains (the big mudslide
that took out 30 houses) to massage emergency responders. Some of them had been on the job 4-5
days with very little break. If you visit other therapists, please encourage them to join this team.
Anyone can call me for more information.
OCTOBER HILLTOP FESTIVAL A SUCCESS
The THERA-SSAGE booth was a big hit at the Hilltop Festival on October 2. Ramona and I gave free
massages from 8 am -4 pm and had a line most of that time. I lost count, but I estimate we did around
150 massages. We also had a drawing for one of six free massages and two sessions of
microdermabrasion. 8 happy winners in all. The Festival was a lot of fun—good music, good food, good
time for all. We congratulate the town for putting together such a great event.
REVERSE RAFFLE
The Reverse Raffle will be held at The Foundation, Friday, December 3. Tickets are 100.00 and get two
admitted and one chance for the raffle. Every ticket wins something; only 500 are sold. The grand prize
is 10,000. so you have 1:500 odds of winning—a pretty good deal. Champ and I already have our tickets.
THERA-SSAGE is donating a packet of 12 gift certificates, a 600.00 value, and a certificate for two
sessions of microdermabrasion, a 200.00 value. We’re looking forward to this great party!
AMTA-NC CONVENTION
I attended the Fall Convention of the NC chapter of the American Massage Therapy Association last
month. I am responsible for coordinating continuing education for our state, a position I just came into
this summer, so the convention was a new experience for me as an adjunct board member. A lot of
meeting and eating went on, as well as continuing ed classes and committee meetings. AMTA is
valuable to our profession and provides the public with a locater service for therapists who have
agreed to abide by the Code of Ethics and who are committed to continuing their own education. We
are happy to say that our business is a member and also pleased to personally be in service to the
organization.
THERA-SSAGE IS AN AGO PROVIDER FOR RUTHERFORD COUNTY EMPLOYEES
Rutherford County Employees can come to THERA-SSAGEAGONd pay only 20.00 for a massage. The AGO
will pay the balance. What a sweet deal. ♥
WEBSITE ON THE WAY
Be on the lookout for www.thera-ssage.com coming soon. Our specials will be posted each month
along with our full menu and descriptions of services.
ACUPUNCTURE
We are negotiating with a Licensed Acupuncturist to join our office. We’ll keep you posted! BE SURE
that anyone you receive acupuncture from is a Licensed Acupuncturist (Lac.) and not someone who just
took a weekend class. This ancient healing art is complex and I would not let anyone touch me with a
needle who does’t have a license.
MEET OUR STAFF
Laura Allen, co-owner of THERA-SSAGE, specializes in Aromatherapy, Swedish Massage, and TMJ
Dysfunction. Champ Allen, co-owner, is a Gendai Reiki Master who practices energy work. Carla
Trainum specializes in Deep Tissue Massage/Neuromuscular Therapy, just the thing for people who are
in serious pain. Ramona Blanton specializes in Kaya Regeneration Therapy, Hot Stone Massage, and too
many spa techniques to mention here. Marilyn Mathews specializes in the Upledger Method of Manual
Lymphatic Drainage, one of the most beneficial modalities I have ever experienced. Allergies, edema,
migraines, menstrual problems, sinus problems and so much more are helped by this gentle-touch
method. Jack Boyd specializes in the Rolf Method of Structural Integration. This is the deepest
massage you will ever have—for those who want that—but it is nice and slow and doesn’t hurt. I am on
the receiving end of this every week since Jack started with us in September and what a difference in
my body! Everything is going back to where it used to be before I got old and fat! Yeah!
SILLY HOLIDAYS
I get angry phone calls if I leave out the Silly Holidays! So here they are for this issue: October: Sun-
Dried Tomato Awareness Month. October 3-9, Squirrel Appreciation Week. November 1-7, National Fig
Week. Love those Fig Newtons! November 30, Stay Home Because You Are Well Day. December,
National Bingo Month. December 26, National Whiner’s Day. Stay away from me, all you whiners out
there.

New Massage Therapists at THERA-SSAGE Expand Our Services and Our Hours—
We Are Now Open EVENINGS!
We are excited to announce that Ricky Lewis and Lisa Wall, both licensed massage therapists who were
formerly in practice at Rutherford Healing Arts, have joined our staff. Effective immediately, you can
now get evening appointments Tuesday through Friday evenings up until 8 pm. Ricky and Lisa are both
talented therapists, both trained in Spa Treatments, and Ricky also has a specialization in Orthopedic
Massage.
Our updated hours of operation are Mon, 8am-5pm; Tues-Fri, 8am-pm, and Sat, 8am-1pm.
With a one-day notice, we will give you an earlier or later appt. If you schedule by Friday, you may also
request an appt. on Sunday.
Acupuncturist Joins the Staff of THERA-SSAGE
Jennifer Burnette, Master of Science in Oriental Medicine, Licensed Acupuncturist, will be joining the
staff of THERA-SSAGE on November 29. Jennifer lives in Asheville and will be traveling to our office
each Monday to accept clients. If the demand is there, she will agree to work other days as well. We
are very excited about the latest addition to our services. Sessions last between an hour to an hour
and a half. The initial session is 75.00; subsequent sessions are 50.00. Chronic and acute pain, women’
s menstrual problems, headaches, and allergies are only a few of the conditions that can be helped by
this ancient healing art.
Our Website is Up and Running!
We are happy to announce that we have finally joined the Information Age by establishing a website.
Visit us on the web at www.thera-ssage.com You can check out our monthly specials, read all about
our staff members, view our entire menu of services, and also see a listing of Laura Allen’s teaching
schedule for 2005, for those of you who are interested in Continuing Education. While Laura primarily
teaches other massage therapists who need CEUs, some classes such as Reiki and Aromatherapy are
open to the public, no massage experience required.
Holidays are Just Around the Corner!
Where has the year gone? It’s hard to believe that it’s almost Christmas once again. It just seems to
get earlier every year. If you are having the oh-no-I-have-to-go-shopping-syndrome, forget about it and
come over to THERA-SSAGE. You can complete your shopping in ten minutes or less by just giving
everyone on your list a gift certificate for massage. It fits everyone, the color is suitable, it doesn’t sit
around the house collecting dust, and to top it off, if you buy five, we will throw in another one for free.
You can of course take advantage of that deal and keep them for yourself if you want to, bringing the
price of a 50.00 massage down to less than 42.00. And remember, when you give massage, you are
giving the gift of good health.
Silly Holidays
November is National Peanut Butter Month. November 2 is National Plan Your Epitaph Day. How about
this one: “I made some bad deals in my time, but I really went in the hole on this one.” December 5 is
Bathtub Party Day. I’d rather not know exactly what that is.
The Pressure is on!
Rutherford Hospital personnel will be here at our office on Weds., December 1, from 10am-4pm to do
free health assessments. This is part of an on-going project of the hospital to track the health of 6000
Rutherford County residents over a three-year period. Please come; no appointment is necessary, and
we’ll be having something special on that day as well—some good food, a drawing for a free Hot Stone
Massage…who knows what else we’ll come up with between now and then.
Free Chronic Syndrome Support Group Starting at THERA-SSAGE
Beginning Wednesday, December 1, we will host a Chronic Syndrome Support Group at THERA-SSAGE
on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of each month from 6-7 pm. We invite those who suffer from
Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Lupus, and other chronic conditions to participate. Come and
share your experience, strength, and coping skills with others who are in the same boat. Laura Allen
will facilitate. We do not want this to turn into a “whining session.” Rather, we want to focus on the
many things you can do to help yourself feel better. Space is limited so please give us a call if you
would like to attend. If you have a spouse or other family member who does not understand what you
are going through, bring them too—we’ll try to help them see the light!
Community Service
If we might toot our own horn for a moment, we do a lot of community service. Why? To educate the
public about the value of massage therapy, that’s why. This month we will be at Cliffside School for a
health fair on November 16; the next day we are taking care of the folks in Rutherfordton at the Police
Department. If your church or civic organization would like to have this service during an event, give
us a call and we will see if we can accommodate you. There is no charge for this—that’s why they call it
community service.
AHO and Rutherford County Employees
If you are an employee of Rutherford County, your insurance plan includes a membership in AHO,
Alternative Healthcare Options. THERA-SSAGE is an Approved Provider. That means you can come here
and pay 20.00 for massage, and AHO will pay the rest. It came to our attention earlier this week that most
county employees don’t even know they are members or what it means. We wonder why it hasn’t been
publicized more. Rutherford County employees can also utilize the services of Chiropractors and
Acupuncturists in exchange for a low co-payment (and remember, our Acupuncturist is on the way). If
you are a county employee or have friends and family members that are, please tell them to give us a
call. A 20.00 massage is something you can’t beat with a stick!
Milestones
September 8, 2003 was our first day in business. In just over a year, we’ve reached a client list of more
than 300; we’ve gone from having two therapists on staff to having eight; we’ve started accepting
insurance; and we’ve increased our operating hours. We’ve Like any new business, we’ve had a few
struggles. As my beautiful departed Granny used to say, “Dance with the one that brought you.” It is
our wonderful clients that have brought us this far—through referrals, buying gift certificates for loved
ones, and spreading the good news about THERA-SSAGE. We thank you so much. We could not begin
to pay for the amount of good will we have received from our clients. Bless every single one of you.

THANK YOU ONE AND ALL FOR A VERY SUCCESSFUL YEAR!
For our first newsletter of the New Year, I’ve decided to recap the past year. Some of our newer clients
may not know that we send this newsletter out approximately every other month. Now you know you
have something to look forward to! Here are just some of the wonderful things that have happened
here over the past year:
• Ramona Blanton has joined our staff from one of those ritzy spas in Old Cape Cod. Ramona is
Certified in Kaya Regeneration Therapy, a wonderful modality that predates Ayurvedic medicine. Kaya is
usually performed in a series of seven treatments. It is a wonderfully relaxing and revitalizing treatment
using hot herbal oils. Pay for six, and your seventh one is free.
• Jack Boyd, Certified in the Rolf Method of Structural Integration, has joined our staff. Jack lives in
Flat Rock, practices in Asheville and Hendersonville, and is now here every Thursday. Rolfing is the
deepest massage you have ever had, performed very slowly, aimed at releasing the connective tissues
of the body. Champ and I have both just gone through the whole series of 10 recommended sessions,
and what a difference in my body. Breathing is even easier!
• Marilyn Mathews, practitioner of Manual Lymphatic Drainage, has joined our staff, and travels here
from Weaverville every Weds. What an awesome modality. I try to do it at least once a month. The
opposite of Rolfing—MLD is very light touch massage—aimed at the body’s lymphatic system. MLD is
wonderful for migraines, menstrual problems, swelling and bloating, flushing out toxins, and so much
more.
• Jennifer Burnette, Licensed Acupuncturist, has just joined our staff. Jennifer lives in Asheville
and will be coming to THERA-SSAGE every Monday as a service to our clients.
• Deany Martin, RN, Certified in Microdermabrasion, has joined our staff and is here Weds and Thurs
evenings and on Saturdays.
• And our other wonderful staff members, Carla Trainum and Lisa Wall, are still here. Ricky Lewis,
the little devil, has found greener pastures in Florida, and has moved away to work in the spa industry.
Whenever he’s in town, he will be available here for appointments. We will keep his regular clients
notified of when he is popping in for a visit. We wish him all the best.
• We started accepting insurance. Whether or not you can get massage covered by your insurance
company depends entirely on your personal coverage. Due to HIPAA privacy laws, insurance companies
will not tell us anything about you, so we cannot call your company on your behalf. You must personally
call them to find out if they will cover massage. If they do, when you come to our office, we will still have
to call them (in your presence) for approval to do the massage. It’s kind of a hassle to get it started, but
then again, it seems like dealing with any insurance matter is a hassle of some sort. Blue Cross/Blue
Shield will not cover massage unless you have specifically purchased some sort of optional alternative
healthcare plan they are offering. They will pay a physical therapist to massage you. They will not pay
us. You may be able to get BCBS to pay for massage if it is done by a therapist in a chiropractor’s
office. Call them up and complain. That’s the only way to get them to change their policies.
• We became providers of AHO, Alternative Healthcare Options. This is important to Rutherford
County Employees. Tell all RC workers you know that they can now get massage or acupuncture at
THERA-SSAGE for a co-payment of only 20.00.
• We extended our hours. We are now open until 8 pm Tues-Fri evenings by appointment.
• We now have On-Site Couples Massage available. Two of our talented therapists will bring two
tables to your home and set them up side-by-side. They’ll bring along candles and soft music, and give
you and your loved one a wonderful relaxing massage. The cost of this beautiful service is 150.00. What
a great present for an anniversary or Valentine’s Day. And if you’re in the doghouse, we can almost
guarantee this will get you out.
• As of October 1, we implemented the policy that each time you have paid for ten massages, you will
get one free hour of massage. We keep up with this so you don’t have too! And we mail you a nice gift
certificate!
• Our staff members performed approximately 100 hours of Community Service this year. If your
church or non-profit organization is hosting a health fair or other event where massage would be
appropriate, give us a call. There is no charge. That’s why they call it Community Service.
• We implemented our “Buy 5, Get one free” policy on Gift Certificates. You must purchase them all
at once. Of course, you can keep them and use them yourself if you like. That means each massage is
about 42.00.
• We finally got our website up and running. Check it out at www.thera-ssage.com
SILLY HOLIDAYS COMING UP: January 3 is National Toss the Fruitcake Out Day. I like fruitcake myself
and mine has already been eaten, so I can’t participate. January 21 is Squirrel Appreciation Day.
February 13 is Blame Someone Else Day. February 20 is Northern Hemisphere Hoodie Hoo Day. If
anyone knows what that is, call to let me know.
PLEAS FOR HELP!
When we can keep our costs down, we can keep the price of massage at a reasonable level. In looking
back at our schedule book this year, it was shocking to see how much money we lost by people failing to
show up for appointments they had scheduled, without even the courtesy of a phone call to cancel. We
understand that emergencies happen, and that it is sometimes necessary to reschedule an
appointment. When you cancel, we can often fill your slot with another appointment—but only if you let
us know you aren’t coming in time for us to give it to someone else. In the future, abusers will be asked
for a credit card number when booking in order to guarantee the appointment. If we ask you to
guarantee your visit with a credit card, you will know that YOU are one of those abusers. Due to the fact
that our specialty therapists are driving in from Weaverville, Asheville, and Shelby, if you wait until the
last minute to call and cancel, they have wasted a trip, and we want to avoid that.
A few weeks ago one of our therapists called me into the room to look at the table a client had just
vacated. The sheets were absolutely filthy—because the person was absolutely filthy! We have a
shower here for the use of our clients. If you are coming here straight from plowing the field, we don’t
mind at all if you take a shower—in fact, we hope that you do. We’ll provide the towels and the soap.
We won’t wash your back, but hey, you can’t have everything.

NEWSLETTER WILL NOW BE QUARTERLY
The THERA-SSAGE Times will now be published quarterly, beginning with this issue. We’ll have to give
you three months of silly holidays at one clip, but we don’t think you’ll mind.
THE BIG NEWS
We are delighted to announce that Natalie Veres and Heather Wiltse, formerly of Body in Balance, have
decided to merge their practice with ours. These very talented therapists are both certified in Kaya
Regeneration Therapy—Heather is even an instructor of that modality—and they are also both
experienced in many different types of massage and spa treatments. We are absolutely thrilled that
they are joining us. We are also pleased to welcome Robert SunHawk to THERA-SSAGE. Robert is a
Certified Practitioner and Instructor of SomaEnergetics Sound Therapy, and also carries on the healing
tradition of his ancestors through the use of energy work. Champ and I just had our first session with
Robert yesterday and I can report that it was one of the most profound states of relaxation I have ever
experienced. I also felt very much in balance after the session.
WHAT WE’VE BEEN UP TO
Our staff members stay on the go. We participated in a Wellness Panel at Rutherford Hospital along with
Dr. Chris Burley, Chiropractor, and were able to talk to about 40 members of the Realize Rutherford
group about alternative and complimentary healthcare In March, we had a visit from the members of
Beta Sigma Phi, a sorority known around the world as The Friendship Organization for the many good
works they do and support. Our local chapter started the program that gets car seats into the hands of
needy mothers, and also the Empty Arms group that brings solace to parents who have lost a baby.
They came bearing food—thanks for the wonderful pound cake—had their business meeting, and all had
paraffin treatments; some opted for a massage. They also observed as one member got a
microdermabrasion. If you’d like to bring your small group here for a little fun and socializing, give us a
call. You’ve probably never thought of THERA-SSAGE as a meeting place, but hey, we’re versatile! On
April 28, yours truly went to Rutherford Hospital to massage 90 firefighters as part of my duties for the
Carolina Emergency Response Massage Team. CERMT (pronounced like Kermit the Frog) is on the
scene wherever there is a disaster. We provide massage and moral support to emergency responders.
Lisa Wall assisted. See the website at www.cermt.org. I also attended the North Carolina Spring
Convention of the American Massage Therapy Association. It was a great weekend in Asheville at the
Sunspree resort and everyone really had a great time socializing and getting some continuing
education.
SILLY HOLIDAYS
Does April 15 count as a silly holiday? I saw the new tax form from the IRS the other day. There are only
two lines on it. The first is “How much money did you make?” The second is “Send it to us.” April is
International Twit Award Month. We all know a twit. I just didn’t know we were supposed to reward them
for being one. April is, seriously, Stress Awareness Month. We know you’re aware of that stress you’re
carrying around. Bring it on down to THERA-SSAGE and we’ll get rid of it for you. May is Eat Dessert
First Month. That could work for me. It’s also National Salsa Month. I’m not sure whether they mean the
food or the dance. Maybe you can salsa while you’re eating salsa. June is Turkey Lover’s Month. I
would have thought that one would fall in November, but I was wrong. June 20-26 is Carpenter Ant
Awareness Week. Be sure to acknowledge your carpenter ants. They often feel unappreciated. In the
last newsletter, I reported that Feb. 20 was Hoodie-Hoo Day but I didn’t know what that was. Sherry Allen
of Ellenboro, who happens to be my beautiful sister-in-law, let me know that on that day at noon,
everyone in the Northern Hemisphere is supposed to go outdoors, raise their arms in the air, and holler
“Hoodie Hoo” –a little ceremony to usher winter out and bring spring in. I understand that the
congregation at Concord Baptist Church was going to do this as a group after the service.
Our Father’s Healing Herbs and other stuff…
We are very happy to be carrying a line of natural, organic, petroleum-free salves that are one of the
best things I have ever used. They come in nine different formulas, and are hand-made in small batches
by Mike Bunnell of Mill Spring.
Breath Easy is my favorite. Our Father’s Healing Herb Salves also include Anti-Fungal, Lip Balm,
Cayenne, Bone, Flesh and Cartilage, Anti-Inflammatory, Pine Pitch and more. They are just wonderful
and the small size is only 4.00. We now have Milk & Honey Lotion, the wonderful lotion that we have
used on clients after spa treatments. So many people wanted to know if they could buy it—and when
our customers talk, we listen, so we have it available now in take-home sizes. We also have more than
20 varieties of handmade soaps, plus Sombra, Biofreeze, and Young Living Essential Oils available for
purchase. We don’t sell anything we don’t use in here on our clients (not to mention ourselves).
EXERCISE!
Michael Greene at Changing Lives Fitness in Forest City is one of the best things that has ever
happened to me. Michael holds the highest rank of certified personal trainer that it is possible to
achieve, and he is also just a nice human being. Call him at 248-2103 and tell him Laura sent you. If you
are looking for results, and you don’t care about fancy surroundings, but you do care about losing
weight and feeling better without spending a fortune, this is the place for you to go. If you suffer from
Fibromyalgia, there are two things that will make you feel better—without drugs—massage, and
cardiovascular exercise. You will not believe how much better you will feel until you get up and at it.
You may have to force yourself the first few times, but then you will start to notice a big improvement in
your energy level and the way you sleep at night. And you’ll shape up! Don’t take my word for it—call
him yourself!
THERA-SSAGE IS STAFFED BY N.C. LICENSED MASSAGE THERAPISTS &
BODYWORKERS
WE ACCEPT INSURANCE Blue Cross/Blue Shield will not pay for massage in NC unless it is
performed in a doctor’s office or a chiropractor’s office. Aetna will not pay in NC, as many of the
Floridians who have moved here have discovered (they do pay in FL). We just have to call your
particular company and find out if they will cover it. If they do, we’ll be glad to file it. Alternative
Healthcare Options is provided to ALL RUTHERFORD CO EMPLOYEES, who can come here for massage
or acupuncture for a copayment of only 20.00. We are sorry to announce that effective July
1, Rutherford County is changing health insurance plans, and the new plan does not
include AHO coverage. Please, as a consumer, we urge you to call BC/BS and
complain about their failure to cover massage therapy.
THERA-SSAGE is the place to go for Rolfing, Lymphatic Drainage, Deep Tissue Massage,
Reflexology, Neuromuscular Therapy, Swedish Massage, Thai Massage, Shiatsu, Pregnancy Massage,
Sports Massage, Polarity, Reiki, Craniosacral, Mud Treatments, Salt Glow, Microdermabrasion,
Aromatherapy, Structural Rebalancing, Hot Stone Massage, Herbal Body Wraps, Paraffin Treatments, and
more.
Mother’s Day is coming up May 8. Your mother does not need another potted plant, or
another knick-knack to dust in her house. Quit trying to impose your taste in clothes her, too. She
would much rather have a Gift Certificate from THERA-SSAGE. Take our word for it. Call 288-3727 and
we’ll have it ready when you get here. Father’s Day is June 19. Graduates enjoy massage too! All those
June Brides! Bring your bridesmaids. Massage benefits everyone. Relief from stress and/or pain is
only a phone call away.
June 1, Rutherford Hospital personnel will be at our offices conducting free health
assessments. This service is part of an on-going project to track the health of 3000
Rutherford County citizens over a period of several years. Your participation is
appreciated.

unless it is performed in a doctor’s office or a chiropractor’s office. Aetna will not pay
in NC, as many of the Floridians who have moved here have discovered (they do pay in
FL). We just have to call your particular company and find out if they will cover it. If
they do, we’ll be glad to file it. Alternative Healthcare Options is provided to ALL
RUTHERFORD CO EMPLOYEES, who can come here for massage or acunpuncture for a
copayment of only 20.00. We are sorry to announce that effective July 1,
Rutherford County is changing health insurance plans, and the new
plan does not include AHO coverage. Please, as a consumer, we
urge you to call BC/BS and complain about their failure to cover
massage therapy.
